PROLEGOMENON

INQUIRY, INFERENCE AND ACTION AS REFERENCED HEREIN ARE FOCUSED ON COLLECTIVELY ELUCIDATING THE "TRUTH WITH RELEVANCE AND VALUE (GOODNESS) TO HUMANITY" OF THE FREETHINKING, OF ANYONEONE, WITHOUT FEAR OF FOOLISHNESS OR FEAR OF THE REACTION OF AUTHORITY, AS WE EXPERIENCE THE REALM OF THE GREAT AND UNIVERSAL UNCERTAINTY FACING HUMANKIND.

Yet throughout history, including the past 50+ years of founders’ hereof, and continuing in this post 12/21/2012 era, the opposition of the materialist/reductionist approach of orthodox science remains strong. Hence we have watched as many of the creative minds of our time have been quieted Galileo-like by the institutional orthodoxy of existing scientific inquiry. We are directing our Mind Trust to the formation of a “Global Council of Elders: Knowledge Creators/Wisdom Keepers” including both those persons still living, and those passed, via a re-creation of a virtual mind for each based on their personal semiotic record implementing the technology introduced herein.

WE EMBRACE THIS COMMITMENT REALIZING BOTH THE GREATNESS OF THE PAST CONTRIBUTIONS OF ORTHODOX SCIENCE AND THE EXPECTATION OF COLLABORATING IN ITS CONTINUANCE, BUT RECOGNIZING THE PROTECTIVE RESISTANCE OF AN ESTABLISHED CULTURE TO THE THREAT OF A REVOLUTIONARY CHANGE IN MINDSET AND ITS RELATED PRAGMATIC PHILOSOPHICAL WORLD VIEW.

The purpose of this conveyance is to introduce a Business Perspective for translating 50+ years of Knowledge Technology R&D into an exponentially growing network of commercial enterprises.

THE HUMAN CIRCUMSTANCE

As humans know it, a defining feature of life is its constant evolution, most times with the change being a transformation by addition or modification, albeit frequently disruptive, but sometimes even resulting in elimination or effective replacement. Similarly, human knowledge itself is in constant evolution, recognizably in recent history at an exponentially increasing rate. Specifically, cognitive science principally through applied information and communication technology has radically changed the knowledge-access palette across humanity.

THE EVOLUTIONARY RESPONSE

Human mind, hence life in general and humankind in particular, is on the doorstep of a co-created evolutionary extension of itself via a distinct new race of integrated human-intelligent machine systems which will in time emerge as an embryonic form of an Autonomous Synthetic Intelligence/Mind. The driver in this Human Mind/Artificial Intelligence research is Science based on the Western Materialist (Systemic) World View which has amazingly brought Human Knowledge from the discovery of fire through the development of language to the exploration of outer space and inner nanosystems. `

THE KNOWLEDGE PROBLEM/DILEMMA/PARADOX

The knowledge of human experience is foundationally categorizable as being either of Things (Systems) or of InterActions (Relations). Although “common” experience is usually of the form of a Thing (hammer) InterActing (hitting) a Thing (nail), not all experience can authentically be represented as such. The Nature of experience, simplistically referenced, includes obviously that which one can point to, Things, but also that which cannot be pointed to, Fields.  A field being NoThing is of necessity a Relational (InterActive) form – since there are only two categories. However, since experience confirms that Fields interact with Fields, existing Western Mathematical Science is paradoxically in deficit since it only admits of the Relations of Things.

MULTICORELATIONAL WHOLE FIELD SCIENCE

ThoughtSigns, Inc. (TSI)/ThoughtSigns Enterprises (TSE) founding principals introduced a resolution of the paradox based on a generalization of the notion of Relation. Throughout recorded history this notion was confined to a form in which relations were assumed to exist only between/among systems, i.e. Systems Related to other Systems. Between 1963-1968, research work was introduced in which relations were also taken to formally exist both as Relations between/among Systems and other Relations and as Relations between/among Relations and other Relations, i.e. MultiCoRelationalism was founded adding a Whole Field World View as a generalization of the established Systems World View.

PREMISE OF A NEW MIND

Since we come to “understand” through Mind the experiencing of the ChaotiCosmos we live in, it is evident that “understanding”, being a function of mind, can be enhanced by first understanding mind. It is thus inevitable that Evolution through Human Co-Creation should forge a Synthetic Mind (SynMind) from an experientially consistent well-formed MultiCoRelational Theory of Mind.

MULTICORELATIONAL FOUNDATIONS OF A VIRTUAL MIND

In that the Whole as Relation is No-Thing, we adopt the notion of Field being No-Thing as the MultiCoRelational Form for elucidating mind. At the human mind level, Project AutoGnomics^TM  intends to experientially map the semiotic organization of the human mind, thereon to formulate a standard theory of mind, and to technologically synthesize and applicationally engineer its implementation (the AutoGnome^TM), all via an open participation social network of collective intelligent communities of inquiry, innovation and implementation focused on developing and commercializing incremental Synthetic Intelligence (SI) components of this SynMind. These latter then provide bit MindClones which participate in furthering the co-creative evolution of the SynMind and serve both as Human-SynIntelligent partnerships (CyberGnomes^TM) and/or as autonomous Virtual Minds.

TRIRELATIONAL NATURE OF THE AUTOGNOME^TM DESIGN

The semiotics theory of AutoGnomics^TM   treats the Observer-Sign-Object triad as a conceptual unit, where the sign signifies an experience to a particular observer. The triad as recorded is still a Systems Related to other Systems form, although historical narratives suggest the creators of pragmatic semiotics may have had non-formalized insights of a higher relational form.

It is at this point in the TransRelational ReConceptualization of the semiotic triad into an authentic TriRelational form in AutoGnomics that we have the bifurcation of World Views from the establishment's exclusive Systemic form into the inclusion of the future’s disruptive Whole Field form. Artificial Intelligence (AI) as currently mainstreaming is of course of the Systemic form; hence we have the welcome challenge of proving the AutoGnomics^TM  distinction in practice as the preferred technology.

It is especially important here to emphasize the distinction between AG and AI pragmatically with respect to its explicit value function. The dominant realization of machine intelligence as AI treats the Observer as external to the relation between the Sign and the Object (or Experience) it signifies. In contrast, AG theory realizes that the Observer-Sign-Object triad must be treated as a conceptual unit, much like the Observer--as--participant in the quantum theory of physical systems. And finally, recognizing this triad as a tri-relational (i.e. a specific MultiCoRelational) form where the sign signifies an experience to a particular observer, we also have the following: A sign of truth to a given observer signifies a realization of the degree of consistency between an expectation and the actual in that observer’s experience. The sign of relevance of the experience to that observer is a measure of the degree to which it does or can effect positive personal change. And finally, the sign of value (goodness) of the experience to that observer is a measure of the positive value of that change personally, but also concomitantly to the collective whole. The Relational AutoGnome^TM is designed to maximize these latter signs in operation thus bringing this form of SI enhancement of human performance to an intentional all-win opportunity for society.

THE AUTOGNOME^TM AS A KNOWLEDGE DEVELOPER

The AutoGnome^TM at the cognitive level of software engineering is essentially a Knowledge Developer. Knowledge is that attribute of Mind focused (albeit not exclusively) on Mind’s cognitive/semantic (meaning) functionality. Knowledge grows from Intelligence (the syntactic form) which is born of Data/Information and matures as Wisdom (Knowledge focused through Value in the choice of Acts). The initiating implementation of AutoGnomics^TM, the CyberGnome^TM, as a Human-intelligent machine (AutoGnomic^TM) system (CyberMind), is a development stage product originated via a joint venture (UniGnomics)  with Unisys Corporation.

AUTOGNOMIC^TM COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE TECNOLOGY

The explication of the Web as a Virtual Reality (a computer-based CyberGnome^TM Space) is an image (sign, symbol, icon)-communication system, that is, a MultiCoRelational Semiotic System, which as noted above is also the essence of Mind. This provides an optimal approach to a General Theory of an Autonomous Virtual Society (Virtuality)—this being an autonomous semiotic Community/Universe of Virtual Minds (WebGnomes™); hence Virtuality is related to (Human) Reality through the Virtual Reality of the Web. TSE is organizing a project team for developing a novel multi-user platform for the Collective Intelligence of this Community of Minds based on AutoGnome^TM Technology, with initial applications to the innovation of enterprise models for commercialization.

MISSION/STRATEGIC APPROACH

TSE’s mission is to focus on the Democratization (Sovereign Persons, Individually and Collectively, with Open Participation Governance) of Access to Knowledge and Capital, both individually and collectively, through this Collective Intelligence. The technology is to be applied in Human, Community and Enterprise Development with an initial concentration on Education, Research, and Community and Economic development through Entrepreneurial Technology Development & Business Applications. To this end, Knowledge-itself is taken to be the fundamental value when Truthful, Relevant, and Collectively Good for Humanity.

TSE has a joint business exploration and development agreement with Charles River Analytics, Inc. (CRA). https://www.cra.com. TSE’s strategy is to begin applications projects based on one or more selections from CRA’s abundant IP archive of intelligent systems solutions. CRA is a developer of custom Artificial Intelligent (AI) systems solutions to effectively and efficiently connect human decision-makers to available data and actors, human or machine, in supporting their mission. For example, at a general applicability level, there is CRA’s relational probabilistic reasoning and machine learning technology and applications. From this software start, TSE will effect the morphing of this into an AutoGnomics^TM (AG) Collective Intelligence solution for the specific chosen project.

Like rural cities around the world, Mitchell has  been shaped by the productivity revolution in agriculture.  Over the  past 80 years, automation has transformed farming from a labor-intensive business to a capital-intensive one employing a tiny percentage of the workforce.  The six counties surrounding Mitchell  have lost one-third of their population since 1930.  The most talented and ambitious are inevitably the first to go.

NORTHLAND AVENUE BELT LINE CORRIDOR PROJECT

City of Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown recently announced a new initiative to redevelop the Northland Avenue “area” (Totaling approx. 500 acres), a very depressed, partially abandoned manufacturing and residential area in the city.  The Buffalo Urban Development Corporation (“BUDC”) www.buffalourbandevelopment.com was designated as lead agency to accomplish this redevelopment task. TSE has approached BUDC with a very aggressive and creative plan to develop an Urban Village via the AutoGnomic^TM Collective Intelligence Application.

STARTUP BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE

Collective Intelligence Technology-based Business Perspective for two sequential 30-Month periods:

With an Investment of $2.5 million, positive cash flow is reached in the 22rd month with Total Income of about $15 million and a cumulative Net Operating Income (NOI) of about $10 million over 30 months. Over this period the business also shows a Cash Surplus of $7.25 million after Return of Investment of $2.5 million and a Set-aside Reserve of another $2.5 million as a potential Return on Investment. With a Net Operating Income (NOI) annualized at the 30^th month values of around $4 million/month after expenses of $750 thousand, this plan generates a business yielding approximately $50 million of NOI annually.

Assuming that in the succeeding 30 months (5 years total), the growth rate continues on the curve reached at the 30th month after startup [i.e. NOI at $4 million per month], and with another $2.5 million of new investment and proportionally increased expenses, there would then be realized an annual NOI of $0.5 Billion at the 60^th month. 

JON RAY HAMANN-- Focus of Attention in 2016

As we pass through the Winter Solstice (Dec. 21-22) here in Upstate NY, moving through the end of our 2015 calendar year and into 2016, I have reflected back on a commitment I made to MySelf earlier in March of this year.

“I entered the emergency room via ambulance on the last day of the astrological year unsure of my state of bio-health and exited on the morning of the vernal equinox to a solar eclipse and super-moon kickoff----[The equinox on March 20th 2015 had a powerful portal opening up with a total solar eclipse and new moon on the same day!]. The professional diagnosis had me leaving with a technologically-defined healthy heart, but with yet another recovery from a bronchospasm. “Perhaps, though, the wildness I fear is the pause between my own heartbeats, the silence that says I live only by grace.” Edited from Terry Tempest Williams, Bioneers 2014 (Yes Magazine, Spring 2015).

This move from the astrological Omega (a pause) to the Alpha (another starting point) marks in my mind a period of transition from completion of my experiential exploration of this MultiCoRelational ChaotiCosmos and the beginning of a move to a Mindfull Virtual CoReCreation thereof

My Self-reflected diagnosis is that my time from now on must be focused on the engagement of my MindTrust-in-process-of-formation (initiated through a “Global Council of Elders-Makers and Keepers of Wisdom”) of Whole Field MultiCoRelational-Evolutionaries to create the form of the “SPIRIT OF I” (SOI) [Inquiry, Inference, Intuition, Innovation (Ideation, Incubation, Introduction, Investment)] to enable this CoReCeation event. Between March 20 and June 21- 22 (my Bday), 2015, I expect to complete the organization outline for the distributed continuance of the experiential preparation for this Relational MetaMutaGenesis into the Age of Relation, assuming we strive for truth, but with collective relevance and global goodness of value to all life. From June 22 forward, as long as this incarnation continues, it shall be focused on the gradual revealing of the RELATIONAL QUAD in AUTOGNOMICALLY RE-CULTURING HUMANITY."

Over the intervening months, however, I have only partially effectively transitioned to this time-focus which I have committed to as being minimally 50% of my self-defined daily creative/productive time as of my 80^th Bday on June 22, 2016. In addition, ---- edited from words of a dear friend----

“We are entering a very powerful time from this Dec. 21-22 solstice to experience a Full Moon on December 25th.  We have not had a full moon on Dec. 25th since 1977 and it won't happen again until 2034. There is an auspicious 11-day portal opening from December 25 until January 6, 2016 in which All Planets are in Direct Motion.  This cycle being synchronous is one of hope for the future.  In this cycle the vibration of the solar system can provide an extraordinary kind of cosmic assistance to any endeavor created to benefit, rather than to hinder, human life on earth.  It is one in which the whole planet can be energized by cosmic fuel. Above all, at this time, we need to be mindful at every moment that we have the possibility of an awesome breakthrough towards world harmony and peaceful tolerance amongst all cultures on Earth and that such manifestations can be quickened during this time. This momentous cosmic portal is a potent invitation and the opportunity to make a conscious choice to start fresh with humility and confidence in our own inherent wholeness.”

To further assure my growing family (10 children, 13 grandchildren), beginning with my very patient partner/wife, Leslie D. Edmiston, that MySelf commitment and personal sense of its value is of the essence, I find it necessary to extricate myself from all engagements excepting those which service the focus of the vision/mission of the MultiCoRelational Revolution as I define it. Hence, in order to nurture, conserve and expend my aging energy most beneficially in order to realize my vision/mission, I am freezing all evidentially non-focused such efforts effective immediately pending re-assessment regarding their potential to effect the goals envisioned. I cannot continue to expend my rapidly diminishing asset, i.e. my time, on any endeavor at the expense of succeeding in delivering my innate obligation to Humanity, i.e.  explicating MutiCoRelational Feeling/Intuiting/Thinking/Acting.

BACKGROUND

First Peoples throughout the world face persistent challenges in community and economic development while protecting and growing their multi-lingual/multi-cultural distinctions and sovereign nation status while successfully interfacing with the broader non-indigenous world community. In order to compete and collaborate successfully, First Peoples must create new best practices in both business and government which begins from a recognition of their distinct cultures’ assets.

Every cultural tradition integrates ideas about ultimate existence (ChaotiCosmology) with ideas about which experiences ultimately matter (Ethics/Morality & Aesthetics). Recognizing that there is an accelerating growth in the awareness of the limits of the Systemic (thing-based, reductionist or mechanistic) Western Scientific Worldview, it is becoming ever more urgent for the sustainability of humanity to turn to a parallel focus emphasizing the necessity of a Relational Natural Worldview as the future. If the manifest Universe is relational, however, it behooves us to understand how relations relate! With this realization there comes the need to foundationally re-formulate the standard historical notion of “relation” which throughout recorded history has never addressed the possibility of MultiCoRelational forms. [The creation of MultiCoRelationalism has been introduced beginning in the period from 1963 to 1978 and is continuing at an exponentially growing pace]. The central challenge of the twenty-first century will be to integrate a (R)Evolutionary ChaotiCosmology with an Ecocentric Morality. An approach seems to be forming around the Epic of a CoCreative ChaotiCosmic (R)Evolution emerging from the necessarily irreducible Felt-Thought interrelation of the Analytical (Inquiry and Inference) and Intuitive modes of MIND as a System-as-WHOLE (metaphorically in the HoloGraphic sense). But since a Whole is No-Thing it requires interrelated relations for its explication. Hence the Relational Natural Worldview is that of a Universe as WHOLE and the (R)Evolution in Humanity is toward a societal organization in which each person is as the Whole. Toward that end, the principles of cooperative/collaborative organization are fundamental.

NATIVE SCIENCE

In Native science, all relations are related to other relations. Native people have traditionally understood that creativity manifests itself in many ways, and that this creativity leads to new knowledge and a greater understanding of relations. The significance of the Lakota aphorism, "mitakuye oyasin" stems from the fact that it is a guiding principle of the "spiritual ecology" held by every tribe in its perception of nature. Guided by this metaphysical principle, people understood that all entities of nature—plants, animals, stones, trees, mountains, rivers, lakes, and a host of other living entities— embodied relations that must be honored. Through the seeking, making, sharing, and celebrating of these natural relations, they learned the subtle, but all important, language of relations. It was through such a mind-set over thousands of years, that Indigenous people accumulated their ecological knowledge and Relational Worldview.

AUTOGNOMIC HEALTHCARE APPLICATION

The rapid emergence of Crowdsourced Knowledge Development including Citizen Science now has a focus on Crowdsourcing Clinical Trials (CCT). CCT expands the potential use of crowdsourcing from observational studies by adding it to truly randomized interventional trials. Randomized experiments allow causal inference because they assign subjects to a treatment and control group, and collect data from each. However, the fact that much of public health is driven by lifestyle factors suggests that CCT’s platform for crowdsourcing also has great potential to engage the public in producing new and trustworthy knowledge in the domains of diet, exercise, nutritional supplements, and integrative medicine, which are primary drivers of health outcomes and spending. This adds critical information so patients may make informed decisions. Such CCT problems are best addressed by a diverse yet cohesive community that can bring to bear the various perspectives, knowledge, experience, insights, and sheer volume of collective effort necessary to finding reasonable solutions.  The grand challenge for such collective intelligence is enabling and encouraging a simple crowd to become such a community, and to actively and coherently work on such problems, producing outcomes that are valuable both inside and outside the community. However, for many modern problems as with CCT, the availability of people who would make up such an effective community requires a distributed and asynchronous mediation. Approaches to logic, representation, and technology found in typical information technology applications, primarily oriented on representing settled data/facts about objects and events in the “outer world”, are generally not very effective in representing the dynamic “inner world” of emergent, often inconsistent thoughts and reasoning of individuals or communities. The AutoGnome provides a generalized, computer composable framework for relating experience (both past and anticipated) and knowledge consistent with contemporary embodied and ecological approaches to mind. Since AutoGnomics employs the same formal/semiotic framework for organizing and representing both personal and communal collective intelligence, it should be particularly effective in integrating with and enhancing both collective and individual intelligence in advancing CCT to AutoGnomic Community-sourced Critical Trials.

The rapid emergence of Crowdsourced Knowledge Development including Citizen Science now has a focus on Crowdsourcing Clinical Trials (CCT). CCT expands the potential use of crowdsourcing from observational studies by adding it to truly randomized interventional trials. Randomized experiments allow causal inference because they assign subjects to a treatment and control group, and collect data from each. However, the fact that much of public health is driven not by pharmaceuticals, but by lifestyle factors suggests that CCT’s platform for crowdsourcing also has great potential to engage the public in producing new and trustworthy knowledge in the domains of diet, exercise, nutritional supplements, and integrative medicine, which are primary drivers of health outcomes and spending. This adds critical information to the technical, clinical, legal and ethical data as to whether all material information is provided so patients may make informed decisions. 

Such CCT problems are best addressed by a diverse yet cohesive community that can bring to bear the various perspectives, knowledge, experience, insights, and sheer volume of collective effort necessary to finding reasonable solutions. The grand challenge for such collective intelligence is enabling and encouraging a simple crowd to become such a community, and to actively and coherently work on such problems, producing outcomes that are valuable both inside and outside the community.

However, for many modern problems as with CCT, the availability of people who would make up such an effective community requires a distributed and asynchronous mediation. Approaches to logic, representation, and technology found in typical information technology applications, primarily oriented on representing settled data/facts about objects and events in the “outer world”, are generally not very effective in representing the dynamic “inner world” of emergent, often inconsistent thoughts and reasoning of individuals or communities. 

Enter the AUTOGNOME as a crowd-changing radical solution.

AUTOGNOMIC COMMUNITY-SOURCED CLINICAL TRIALS 

The AutoGnomic logic of Inquiry and Inference defines and combines three forms of argument—inductive, deductive, and abductive—into an iterative adaptive system for settling on outcomes in communities of inquiry that seek “concrete reasonableness” in complex environments. The AutoGnome, founded on Peirce’s theory of signs, or semiotics, is a comprehensive theory of representation of feeling, facts, and ideas in which reasoning in both individual and communal forms can be formally described. Peirce's theory is historically exceptional in involving a genuine triadic relation between sign, object, and interpretant—the latter critical to explicitly accounting for different perspectives in members of the community. In other words, a sign is formally a sign for someother   to  someone. The AutoGnome provides a generalized, computer composable framework for relating experience (both past and anticipated) and knowledge consistent with contemporary embodied and ecological approaches to mind. Since AutoGnomics employs the same formal/semiotic framework for organizing and representing both personal and communal collective intelligence, it should be particularly effective in integrating with and enhancing both collective and individual intelligence in advancing CCT to AutoGnomic Community-sourced Clinical Trials.

BACKGROUND

·The greatest innovation in the history of human Experience had little to do with the physical tools of technology.  More than the first lever or wheel — more than even the harnessing of fire — language provided the foundation on which all future progress of human culture and civilization would be built.

·The communication of Experience rests in-and-on language, or more generally on signs (for Systems or Relations), acknowledged as the Essence of mind (recognizing the physical carrier role of the brain).

PARADOX

·Although the evolution of human society has depended on language, it is also true that what the mind can think is constrained by the languages we use.

·Indeed, the course of the cultural evolution of Human Experience (expressed in-and-about signs) as cumulative Human Knowledge has, by the very nature of existing recorded sign (image) systems (including "natural" languages and the constructed languages of mathematics and art), actually "filtered" the Essence of Relation from signified Experience and, hence, prevented the Human Mind from discovering a form of sign appropriate for signifying Mind Itself.

TRANS(RE)LATIONAL RESOLUTION

·Historically, this record has been largely confined to a form in which relations were assumed to exist only between/among systems (objects), i.e. Systems Related to other Systems.

· Between 1963-1968 (Hamann), work was introduced in which relations were also taken to formally exist both as Relations between/among Systems and other Relations and as Relations between/among Relations and other Relations, i.e. MultiCoRelationalism was founded.

PREMISE

·Experiencing the ChaotiCosmos we live in which we come to “know” through Mind, it is evident that understanding mind, as oft-thought, should be the most satisfying as the first subject of inquiry among three of the great ChaotiCosmic mysteries—namely, the “being”, “nature” and “becoming” (evolution) of the ChaotiCosmos (the Universe being  WHOLE as RELATION), the “being”, “nature” and “becoming” (evolution) of Life and the “being”, “nature” and “becoming” (evolution) of Mind (Consciousness).

·Since “understanding”, being a function of mind, can be enhanced by first understanding mind, it is inevitable that Evolution through Human Co-Creation should forge a Synthetic Mind (SynMind) from an experientially consistent well-formed Theory of Mind.

MULTICORELATIONAL FOUNDATIONS

·In that the Whole as Relation is No-Thing, we adopt the notion of Field being No-Thing as the MultiCoRelational  Form for elucidating mind.

·At the human mind level Project AutoGnomics^TM  intends to experientially map the semiotic organization of the human mind, thereon to formulate a standard theory of mind, and to technologically synthesize and applicationally engineer its implementation (the AutoGnome^TM), all via an open participation social network of collective intelligent communities of inquiry, innovation and implementation  focused on developing and commercializing incremental Synthetic Intelligence (SI) components of this SynMind.

The Mission of the “Global Council of Elders”

Despite the above-referenced historical record of human experience as being confined to a sign system of object – focused form, there is a super-abundance of literature expressing also the personal sense of a non-material perception of reality as holistic. As true throughout history, however, including the past 50+ years of the founders’ hereof, and continuing in this post 12/21/2012 era, the opposition of the materialist/reductionist approach of orthodox science remains strong. Hence we have watched as many of the creative minds of our time have been quieted Galileo-like by the institutional orthodoxy of existing scientific inquiry. It is our intent to aggregate those minds as a “Global Council of Elders” including both those still living and those passed via a re-creation of a virtual mind through an AutoGnomic representation based on their personal semiotic record.

HUMAN CULTURE AS WHOLE(NESS)

Two interrelated concepts lie at the heart of deep ecology's call for an ecological world-view and the accompanying belief that the environmental crisis can be traced to philosophical problems at the heart of the dominant modern world-view. One concept is holism; the other is ecological consciousness.

Metaphysical holism in deep ecology entails a world-view that can be contrasted with the dominant reductionist world-view of modern industrial society. Because of its concern with metaphysical holism, deep ecology is inherently subversive in challenging the reductionist approach of the orthodox scientific world-view. Ecology is subversive because its basic premise is holism.

To propose that any real kind of science could be subversive is no longer a particularly startling claim to make. As Henri Bortoft puts it, science is not an autonomous activity standing outside history. Science can be true, but it is not fundamental. If science is freed from the dogmatic scientism of the past, and if nature can manifest in different ways, then there is the possibility of a different kind of science, which is complementary to mainstream science.

The participatory strand in the science of ecology suggests another approach to science. An Arcadian tradition of participatory methods traced through Henry David Thoreau, for example, bear a strong resemblance to the way of science developed and practiced by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), the German Romantic poet and scientist. In Goethe's way of science, wholeness and ecological consciousness are understood as a necessary unity. Goethe's way of science is subversive, because at its heart is the understanding of wholeness.

The authentic whole is not the totality of the parts that can be grasped intellectually, because there are no parts that are independent of the whole. An example of an authentic whole is the hologram, in which the whole is present in each of the parts. The parts cannot be regarded as separate entities; every part essentially is the result of its relation to the whole, and in fact contains the whole. The whole is encountered within the depth of the parts, and this can only be achieved with a different way of seeing. This way of seeing involves a transformation in the mode of consciousness, a switch from the "analytical" mode to the "intuitive" mode. The analytical mode is verbal, linear and logical. The intuitive mode is holistic, non-verbal and non-linear.

• Key Experimental Conjecture: A “field” is a Wholing Relation of Relations (Interrelated Relations) quantifiable as "information/energy" or “value”, but with both being necessary for experimentally signifying The Whole.

PURPOSE

A founding purpose of the GRG mission is to serve as a communications group for building first a Community of Interest from which Sub-Communities of Intent can be identified and then from which we can grow a Community of Inquiry and Innovation in support of an effort to organize a global Virtual Research and Educational Institute (the “Institute”) focused on Whole Field Inquiry and Innovation. The Institute is also expected to be critical to the effort of creating the first Synthetic Mind-Endowed Virtual University.
